7 Core Emphases Matrix 1

A3 Alumnus Designs Pathway for Minimum Levels of Effectiveness and Competence

GPro Pastor Training Congress

GPro logoThe recent GPro Pastor Training Congress highlighted an important need in the world of developing leaders for Christ’s Church today:  A Minimum Viability for Pastor Effectiveness and Competence

It reminds me of these words to Timothy from Paul:

"If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."
— 1 Timothy 4:6-8

Be sure to review the full context of Paul’s wisdom but here we see the importance of equipping newer Christ-Followers.

There are many good standards programs in operation or development today. I’ve endorsed one of them already: Re-Forma. At the congress I learned of several more including one developing for Our Daily Bread University and another for Micro-Credentialing through ICETE. They are all worth checking out!

GPro Courses Small

A Pathway from Jason Richard Tan

A3 alumnus Dr. Jason Richard Tan did a masterful job of preparing this pathway for minimum levels of effectiveness and competence and I’m proud of him. These were showcased at the recent Congress in Panama.

Here are a few of the highlights from the pathway:

  • A significant number of pastoral leaders worldwide lack formal training and rely on nonformal and informal education.
  • Frequently, these training programs are provided as isolated courses. Although many of these training opportunities are valuable, they often leave pastoral leaders uncertain about their next steps.
  • The 7 Core Emphases Framework can function as a micro-curriculum for self-trained pastoral leaders.
  • These emphases are not courses but are fields of learning that a pastoral leader must know to be effective. New and under-trained pastoral leaders are encouraged to develop ministry skills around these 7 Core Emphases, namely:
    1. Spiritual Maturity
    2. Scripture Knowledge
    3. Theology Essentials
    4. Biblical Preaching
    5. Missions Engagement
    6. Pastoral Leadership
    7. Intentional Discipleship

Dr. Tan’s work affirms the import of our focus: Changing the Few who Change the Many. Through his work here on a simple, reproducible pastor training pathway, he is living out this principle in multiplying fashion!

Praise God for his instruction!

"If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus… train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."
