Reflections on the Marriage & Family Module in Armenia

There are moments in ministry when God’s presence feels especially near, where Scripture, community, and shared stories weave together into something beautiful. Our time in Armenia for the A3 Marriage and Family module has been one of those sacred times.
From the very first morning of teaching, we sensed something tender unfolding. Couples arrived eager to learn, eager to grow, eager to discover how to build Christ-centered marriages in a culture where family ties run deep and community forms the backbone of daily life. And we felt deeply humbled to walk with them on this journey.
A Hunger for Connection and Truth
One of the first things that struck us was the level of engagement. During our opening sessions, as we explored Genesis 2, shared our stories, discovered our personality types, and reflected on God’s design for marriage, the room came alive.
Couples leaned in. They asked thoughtful questions. They wrestled with Scripture together. They opened their hearts.
And then came the testimonies that were so encouraging:
“The authenticity of the faculty has been encouraging. You have been real with us and spent time with us, whereas many teachers don’t interact with us in other programs.”
“We love your humility and heart.”
“We loved digging into the Scriptures ourselves rather than only listening to lectures—and then your insights and wisdom after we shared brought clarity.”
These words reminded us why we do this work. A3 has always been about life-on-life, not just content. Relationships matter. Authenticity matters. Walking alongside leaders matters.
Scripture That Forms, Shapes, and Heals
The heart of the module was a deep dive into biblical teaching on love, unity, communication, finances, and intimacy. We explored five biblical words for love, as well as practical ways to express love by learning each other’s love languages.
One leader told us,
“This is the first time I’ve understood these different kinds of love in Scripture.”
And as we wrestled through passages in Ephesians 5, Song of Solomon, Psalm 127, and more, we saw couples lean into God’s Word with fresh eyes and open hearts.
Shared Meals, Laughter, Dancing, and Tears
Armenian hospitality is legendary but experiencing it firsthand is something else entirely. One evening felt like a graduation celebration with testimonies, joy-filled dancing, games, and incredible Armenian food. It was the first time we’ve had a midpoint celebration in an A3 cohort, and it felt like a glimpse of the Kingdom: laughter, unity, joy.
A Hard Night and God’s Kindness
Then came the unexpected twist.
Joe drank some contaminated water and spent the entire night in the bathroom. By morning it was clear he needed medical help. Jakes and Artur graciously stepped in to cover the final day of teaching - which turned out beautifully—while Silk and the team arranged for care.
I (Joe) ended up hooked to an IV at a local clinic, receiving medication while messages of prayer poured in. After rest, recovery, and much kindness from the team (and Silk being the strong, steady trooper she always is), we eventually moved to a quieter hotel to regain strength.
God’s grace has been palpable. The team cared for us with such love. The prayers from Armenia and around the world lifted us. And though I would not choose another night like that, I felt God’s presence even in the weakness.
What We Saw God Do
Even with unexpected challenges, we witnessed God at work in Armenia:
- Marriages were strengthened.
- Leaders were renewed.
- Scripture came alive in fresh ways.
- The cohort’s relationships with each other deepened.
- Hope grew.
Couples walked away not just with content, but with a roadmap for flourishing and simple questions they can return to again and again:
- How can we grow stronger together by understanding our story and our differences?
- How can we show love every day through kindness, prayer, and each other’s love languages?
- How can we build more joy and closeness—emotionally, spiritually, and physically?
- How can we guide our family with grace and good habits?
- How can we make wise decisions—about money, ministry, and our future—that honor God?
These questions now shape their journey forward. And, in many ways, they shape ours, too.
Grateful Hearts
As we write this, our hearts are full - full of gratitude for the leaders of Armenia, full of respect for their resilience, full of hope for what God is building through them.
Armenia is a land of deep faith and deep wounds, ancient beauty, and new possibilities. To invest in marriages and families here is to invest in the spiritual future of a nation.
And we are honored to be part of that story.
