Why "one size fits all" Gospel ministry doesn't work in Asia

globeAsia (MNN) — The World Economic Forum recently released an infographic map showing the layout of religions in each country. When you look to the West, there is already a heavy Christian influence. But the farther east you go, particularly in Asia, the more religious diversity you see – everything from Hinduism and Buddhism to Islam and Atheism. “The vast majority of other faiths are headquartered or predominant in these nations,” Joe Handley, President of A3 says. “[Christians] are really hungry for a breakthrough of a Christ-centered focus in their nations.” A3 serves in 16 countries across the continent and may expand into seven more countries by 2020...

typewriter cyclonefani 600pxIndia (MNN) – India learned from the bitter lessons of 1999 when a super cyclone struck Odisha (formerly known as Orissa) and killed 10,000 people, mostly in Odisha state. Upon learning that another massive storm was aiming straight for the east coast last week, government officials evacuated over a million people. David Dayalan, the India country director for A3 (A3), says although Cyclone Fani still claimed dozens of lives, the evacuation saved tens of thousands of lives. Heatwave complicates recovery...

Sri Lanka (MNN) — Two days ago on April 21 – Easter Sunday – suicide bombers triggered nearly-simultaneous attacks in six heavily-populated locations. Associated Press lists the locations here. Today, Sri Lankans unite in a national day of mourning to recognize more than 290 bombing victims. Many Christians lost their lives when suicide bombers targeted three churches with large congregations. “They targeted this day, Easter Sunday, because of the vast numbers of people they could impact,” adds...

Japan (MNN) — There’s a new day dawning in the land of the rising sun. Japan’s current emperor – Akihito – is stepping down at the end of April. His son, Crown Prince Naruhito, will take over this largely-symbolic yet culturally-vital role on May 1. The move basically amounts to resignation, which doesn’t seem like a big deal at first glance. Yet, as Takeshi Takazawa of explains, “This is the first time a current emperor has decided and requested… that he would resign [and for the] Crown Prince to assume the emperor’s position. “This is a brand new thing in our history.” ...

North Korea (MNN) – All eyes are on the peninsula dividing the Koreas over the next couple of days.

Will North and South Korea be able to move past the Cold War framework toward peace?   Is American President Donald Trump’s leadership style just bold and brash enough to convince North Korea’s Kim Jong Un that peace and reunification is in everyone’s best interest?  These are the questions that await an answer as the two-day Summit gets underway.

Churches beef up security in the wake of bombings, 2016; courtesy Open Doors USA.

Philippines (MNN) – Three days separated a twin bomb blast at a Catholic church in Jolo and another bomb attack at a mosque in Zamboanga. ISIS claimed Sunday’s attack and government officials blame the terror group for the mosque attack. It’s unsettling, given the siege of Marawi that lasted from May to October 2017. The Philippines has struggled for decades to end a deadly Muslim separatist insurgency in its South. A3’s Philippines director Herman Moldez explains, “The spread of the extremists in the Philippines really was a result of Al Qaeda. There were some people, Muslims, in the Philippines who...

Asia (MNN) — Roughly 36 percent of the world’s population lives in either China or India. China is expected to hold the world’s largest economy by 2050. The 49 nations of Asia span 17,212,048 square miles, or approximately one-third of the Earth’s land area. Joe Handley of A3 says the world’s largest continent has a critical role to play in the Great Commission. “This is Asia’s hour for the Gospel. She is the continent that will be finishing the task of global evangelization...

Indonesia (MNN) — The hits just keep on coming for Indonesia. A volcano erupted yesterday on Sulawesi, the same island rocked on Friday by an earthquake-tsunami combo. As described here, a massive explosion of ash blast more than 19,700 feet into the sky from Mount Soputan – one of Sulawesi’s most active volcanoes. Experts tell the Associated Press there’s no concrete evidence linking Soputan’s activity with the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on September 28, but the disasters could be connected. Thankfully, the ash explosion isn’t...
